Multi-month jobs keep the same monthly rate, and multi-unit orders to one address earn per-unit discounts. Ordering 10 or more units? Call for a direct quote.
How Many Portable Toilets Does Your Construction Site Need?
Two different OSHA tables exist, and the one that floats around the internet (1 per 15) is the general-industry rule for fixed workplaces, 29 CFR 1910.141. Construction sites run on 29 CFR 1926.51(c), and the numbers are not close.
The federal construction ratio: one toilet per 20 workers
| Workers on site (peak) | Federal minimum under 29 CFR 1926.51(c) |
|---|---|
| 20 or fewer | 1 toilet |
| 21 to 199 | 1 toilet seat + 1 urinal per 40 workers |
| 200 or more | 1 toilet seat + 1 urinal per 50 workers |
Quick calculator: what we would actually send
The right column follows the 1-per-10 density most Bay Area GCs order at. The federal minimum keeps the inspector away; one unit per 10 workers keeps the crew from walking to the coffee shop.
| Peak crew | Federal minimum | What we'd actually send |
|---|---|---|
| 10 or fewer | 1 toilet | 1 unit, 2 if shifts overlap |
| 25 | 1 seat + 1 urinal | 3 units |
| 50 | 2 seats + 2 urinals | 5 units |
| 100 | 3 seats + 3 urinals | 10 units |
| 200 | 4 seats + 4 urinals | 20 units |
Two counting rules trip people up. First, count the most workers on site at any one time, not your total roster. Second, a unit only counts toward the minimum if it is clean and working; an overflowing porta potty is a citation, not a facility.
California is stricter than federal OSHA. Cal/OSHA Title 8 §1526 requires one toilet for every 20 employees or fraction thereof of each sex. A crew of 20 men and 5 women needs two units, one per sex. Two exceptions: crews under 5 can share one lockable all-gender unit, and mobile crews with transportation to nearby facilities are exempt entirely.
OSHA Requirements for Construction Site Toilets
Everything lives under 29 CFR 1926.51. Knowing what the standard actually says keeps you out of citation territory.
Access is measured in time, not feet
The 100-foot and 200-foot rules quoted online are not in the standard. OSHA requires ready access: workers reach a unit without leaving the site or crossing active traffic. Mobile crews are exempt only when a facility is about 10 minutes away.
Stable ground, clear paths, lighting
Units sit on level ground, pathways stay clear, and night shifts need lighting. On multi-level projects, place a cluster every 3-4 floors and keep pump-truck access within about 20 feet.
No fixed service interval, but sanitary at all times
Federal OSHA does not fix a numeric interval. Units must stay sanitary, stocked, and working. Weekly service is the baseline; high-traffic sites need 2-3 visits a week. A failed unit stops counting the moment it fails.
Hand-washing: sanitizer only without running water
Hand sanitizer counts only when running water is not available on site. With water available you need a soap-and-water station with towels or a dryer. Our built-in handwash and standalone station both satisfy it.
Keep the paperwork
Service logs, licensed-hauler disposal records, and daily inspection checklists. Most citations come down to too few units, dirty units, missing hand-wash provisions, or mixed-sex crews without the per-sex units §1526 requires.
What non-compliance costs in 2026
Federal OSHA: $16,550 per serious violation, $165,514 per willful or repeated violation, $16,550 per day past an abatement date. Cal/OSHA serious: up to $25,000. A year of one extra weekly-service unit is about $1,885, a tenth of one citation.
What's Included
Every rate is the full cost of keeping your site serviced
Weekly cleaning visits cover tank pumping, sanitizing, and restocking toilet paper, seat covers, and hand sanitizer. All consumables are part of the rate. Delivery and pickup are covered by the one-time $80 fee. Need service between scheduled visits? Emergency cleaning runs $75 to $95 per visit.
