How Much Does a Concrete or Dirt Dumpster Cost in San Jose?
In San Jose an inert dumpster is From $585 for a 5-yard and From $640 for a 10-yard. That is the whole bill for clean concrete, dirt, brick or asphalt: there is no tonnage allowance to exceed and no per-ton charge on top, because the load goes to a recycler rather than a landfill. The same material in a general-debris bin is priced by weight, which is why heavy loads belong here. Rates rise with distance from the yard, so check your city in the table below. What Can Go in a Concrete or Dirt Dumpster
The no-weight-limit price depends on the load being clean. Four materials are allowed, and the bin is checked at the transfer station.
Allowed, no weight limit
- Clean concrete: slabs, footings, curbs, block, with rebar or wire protruding no more than 3 inches
- Clean dirt and soil: excavation spoil, fill, clay, sand-and-soil mixes
- Clean brick: whole or broken, mortar attached is fine
- Clean asphalt: driveway and parking-lot tear-out, millings
- Tile: floor and wall tile
- Dirt with a small amount of grass
Pieces must be under 3 feet. Mixed heavy materials in one bin incur an additional cost, so separate piles are cheaper.
Restricted
- No stucco: it goes in a general-debris bin
- No rebar or wire protruding more than 3 inches from the concrete
- No oversized pieces: break slabs down to under 3 feet
- No garbage of any kind in the load
Above 5% garbage the load is reclassified as general debris: 1 ton included, then $155 to $200 per ton by city.

Why Heavy Material Never Goes in a General Bin
General-debris bins do not take heavy material like concrete, brick or dirt. Our weight limits and fees page says so, and the arithmetic shows why the rule exists.
General-debris bin: priced by weight
Takes wood, drywall, roofing, fixtures and mixed waste, and does not take concrete, brick or dirt. Each size includes a tonnage allowance, 1 ton on the 10-yard and 2 tons on the 20-yard. If heavy material ends up mixed in, every ton above the allowance is billed from the scale ticket at $155 in San Jose, and a bin over a safe weight can be refused at pickup. Concrete weighs about 2 tons per cubic yard and damp dirt about 1, so the allowance would be gone after the first wheelbarrow or two.
Price a 20-yard general binInert bin: no weight cap
Takes concrete, dirt, brick and asphalt, and nothing else. No weight limit under standard service, because clean inert material is crushed and reused as base rock rather than tipped at a landfill. The flat rate is the whole bill, provided the load stays clean.
Price a 10-yard inert binA two-car driveway, and what the rule saves you
400 square feet of concrete at 4 inches thick is about 5 cubic yards in place, about 7.5 once broken, and weighs roughly 10 tons. It belongs in a 10-yard inert. Here is what that weight would cost if it were mixed into a general load:
- 10-yard inert bin, San Jose: From $640. No weight cap, so the 10 tons cost nothing extra.
- 20-yard general bin, San Jose, if the concrete were mixed in: $630 base, 2 tons included, 8 tons over at $155 = $1,240 in overage. Total $1,870, about $1,230 more for the same driveway, and a bin over a safe weight can be refused at pickup.

Which Size for Which Job
Size on broken volume. Weight is not the constraint in an inert bin, so the only question is how many cubic yards are coming out. Concrete at 4 inches thick is about 1 cubic yard per 80 square feet in place, and broken concrete takes about 1.5 times that space in the bin.
Patio, walkway or small slab
Up to about 250 square feet at 4 inches is about 3 cubic yards in place and 4.5 once broken. A 5-yard inert handles it, and at 2 feet 7 inches tall it is the easiest bin to load over the side by hand.
Driveway or parking pad
A two-car driveway is 400 to 600 square feet, 5 to 7.5 cubic yards in place and 7.5 to 11 once broken. Up to about 500 square feet fits a 10-yard inert. A 600 square foot driveway is a 10-yard plus a swap, and lifting the base rock underneath adds another bin.
Excavation and dirt haul-off
Dirt swells about 25% once dug, so a 3-foot-deep footing trench 40 feet long produces roughly 6 cubic yards loose. A 10-yard inert is the dumpster for dirt removal at that scale. Keep roots and sod out or the load is reclassified.
Retaining wall, footings, chimney
Block and brick with mortar attached are fine in an inert bin. Break the pieces under 3 feet, keep the rebar trimmed to 3 inches, and a 5-yard covers most single walls or one chimney.
Asphalt tear-out
Asphalt comes up in slabs and millings and packs dense. A residential driveway fits a 10-yard. A small commercial lot is a multi-bin job that is cheaper booked as swaps than as one oversized load.
Mixed demolition
A bathroom or kitchen tear-out produces drywall, cabinets, tile and a little concrete. The drywall and cabinets are a general-debris job. Put the tile and slab in a 5-yard inert only if they are a clean, separate pile. A general bin does not take concrete, so a mixed pile means sorting the concrete out first.
Four Ways to Get Rid of Concrete and Dirt
An inert bin is not the only option for concrete or dirt disposal. It is the right one when the pile is bigger than a pickup load and you do not want to make the trip.
Recycling yard, self-haul
Bay Area aggregate recyclers take clean concrete and asphalt by the ton and some accept clean dirt. Cheapest per ton, but you supply the truck, the loading and the trips, and a driveway is five to ten of them.
Inert dumpster
Bin arrives, you fill it over up to seven days, bin leaves. No weight charge, no trips. The break-even against self-hauling is usually one pickup load: past that the flat rate wins on time alone.
Junk removal crew
Priced by the truckload and by weight, and heavy material is where the quote climbs fastest. Right for a small pile you cannot lift yourself, and rarely right for a slab.
Reuse on site
Broken concrete makes a serviceable base under a new patio or a dry-stack garden wall, and clean fill dirt is worth keeping if you have somewhere to put it. It does not leave the property, so it costs nothing, but it has to be clean to be usable.
